Influencing my Plots & Style
I realised long ago that as a novelist, I could expose the hidden world of powerful, corrupt figures by making them the villains of engaging, accessible thrillers. This allows readers to stay informed without losing the enjoyment of a leisure read.
Instead of bogging down the narrative with dense, academic explanations of systemic corruption, I prefer to weave subtle nods to global conspiracies into fast-paced plots. This approach keeps the story moving while hinting at the darker forces at play behind the scenes.
I strive to achieve this by blending different genres, focusing mainly on the thrill of investigative mystery and high-stakes adventure.Consequently, my creative process is fuelled by a mix of classic literature and real-world events. Here are some key influences:
Brilliant Investigative Plots
Peter James - Dead Simple
Although written as a Police Procedural, with a few tweaks, Peter James's first novel could have been written from a different perspective. Just imagine it constructed from the viewpoint of the victim or the protagonists. Because the plot is so great, if would have been just as successful.
Masters of Conspiracy
Dan Brown, Steve Berry, and Robert Peston.
All three authors have really made an impact on me regarding their well researched, masterful plots, bringing major global conspiracies in politics and religion to the forefront of the reader's mind. Just imagine if their books were classed as fast holiday reads, touching an even wider audience base.
Legends of Adventure
Hammond Innes, Len Deighton and Alistair MacLean
Tense excitement, for me, is a key ingredient in achieving the emotional response I want to generate for my readers. To attain this requires a certain, almost magical writing style. I love the old masters. Even now, their delivery still excites me.
Real Life Corruption
Documentaries and Docu-dramas
I want my plots to be incredible but still believable. What better way than being inspired by real life. Some of my favourite subjects include: the Enron scandal, the Novichok poisonings in Salisbury UK, the Jesus Army cult and the Metropolitan Police's dirty squad, which influenced Jed Mercurio's BBC drama - Line of Duty.
