Influencing my Plots & Style
I realised long ago that as a novelist, I could expose the hidden world of powerful, corrupt figures by making them the villains of accessible thrillers, whilst centring the plot on the close relationship between a loving father and his strong-willed daughter. This allows readers to experience the emotional dynamics within a caring family whilst staying informed of the corruption that exists within our society without losing the enjoyment of a leisure read.
I find many conspiracy novels get bogged down with dense, almost academic explanations to justify the existence of systemic corruption. I prefer to weave subtle nods to global conspiracies as part of a fast-paced, tense, emotional, intriguing plot. This approach keeps the story moving and the reader emotionally engaged, whilst hinting at the darker forces at play behind the scenes.
As a result, I love blending different genres. The intellectual challenge of an investigative mystery, the dynamics of a psychological thriller and the excitement of a high-stakes adventure. Consequently, my creative process is fuelled by a mix of classic literature and real-world events. Here are some key influences:
Brilliant Investigative Plots
Peter James - Dead Simple
Although written as a Police Procedural, with a few tweaks, Peter James's first novel could have been written from a different perspective. Just imagine it constructed from the viewpoint of the victim or the protagonists. Because the plot is so great, if would have been just as successful.
Masters of Conspiracy
Dan Brown, Steve Berry, and Robert Peston.
All three authors have really made an impact on me regarding their well researched, masterful plots, bringing major global conspiracies in politics and religion to the forefront of the reader's mind. Just imagine if their books were classed as fast holiday reads, touching an even wider audience base.
Legends of Adventure
Hammond Innes, Len Deighton and Alistair MacLean
Tense excitement, for me, is a key ingredient in achieving the emotional response I want to generate for my readers. To attain this requires a certain, almost magical writing style. I love the old masters. Even now, their delivery still excites me.
Real Life Corruption
Documentaries and Docu-dramas
I want my plots to be incredible but still believable. What better way than being inspired by real life. Some of my favourite subjects include: the Enron scandal, the Novichok poisonings in Salisbury UK, the Jesus Army cult and the Metropolitan Police's dirty squad, which influenced Jed Mercurio's BBC drama - Line of Duty.
